Medieval Islamic designers used elaborate geometrical tiling patterns (called "girih") at least 500 years before Western mathematicians developed the concept. These infinitely repeatable designs are themselves made up of individual, self-replicating units. In the Islamic context these have been interpreted as visual demonstrations of the singleness of god and his presence everywhere. They represent the "One in many" and the "many in One."
